weebeasties

i am an event planner. it is a trecherous line of work, really. people have looming expectations. people want a lot for very little. also, it can go very badly sometimes. there are moments in the program that you entrust to others and they fail miserably, and you have 4,000 people STARING. why are they always STARING?

it is illusive work, to be frank. you coordinate things on a grand scale and hope that all the players and pieces come together for a brief moment and... then it is over.

and people want magic- whatever "magic" means to them.

i have a friend who is also an event planner and one of her gigs is a christmas show. when i heard her describing the travails of event-birth, i thought "oh, you poor dear". it has to be the worst holiday to try gig without pratfalls! she was looking for advisement, because she wanted to be innovative. i told her - "don't fuck with christmas!"

people want whatever feels homey to them at christmas. while that can vary according to culture and tradition... there are norms. where you CAN push the innovations, i think, are WITHIN the norms, otherwise people will not be charmed.

and we are in the business of charming people.

"weebeasties" will be the theme for my autumn festival this year. it comes from the Scots, really, who seem to understand and perceive bugs and smallish critters in such a language of paradox! i enjoy the way weebeasties sounds.

my ride is here, so i must sign off...
